Happy Thanksgiving!

Now, I know this is a wine blog, but I have to give a shout to these guys.
From what I've read and researched, these guys have gone through a lot of hard work to put this together.
Check out their press release:

THE BORSCHT FILM FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES ITS SIXTH ANNUAL EVENT AT THE OLYMPIA THEATER AT GUSMAN CENTER IN DOWNTOWN MIAMI

Miami, Florida – The Borscht Film Festival has grown. With the support of the Miami World Cinema Center it has become one of the strongest community film events in South Florida. The festival will take place Saturday November 28th at the Olympia Theater at Gusman Center in Downtown Miami (174 East Flagler Street, Miami, FL 33131). Doors will open at 7:00 PM, films will begin promptly at 8:00 PM. The event is free and open to the public.
Following past years format, the festival will feature the Borscht Select Short Films program consisting of short films submitted by Miami filmmakers under the age of thirty.
In an effort to support local creative talent, the festival will present the “CCCV Stories” a series of five short films commissioned by the Borscht Film Festival, and co-financed by the Miami World Cinema Center, from over 100 submissions. Based out of the MWCC, the Borscht Film Festival selected each film because it tells a different distinctly Miami story that takes place in a specific Miami neighborhood and was created entirely by emerging South Florida artists.
Following the Gusman Event will be the opening of the Oolite Visual Art Showcase, an art gallery located at 22 East Flagler St. Miami, FL 33131 that will showcase the best of Miami-based visual artists under the age of 30, and will feature live performances by local bands. The Oolite Visual Art Showcase will run through Art Basel.
The Borscht Film Festival will also host world-premiere screenings, lectures in partnership with the University of Wynwood (including a Michael Bay Symposium), and other events from November 28th through December 1st, however tickets to these events will only be announced and distributed on November 28th at the Gusman Center.
Together these events showcase Miami’s burgeoning local independent film scene, and is the place to see new works by emerging Miami filmmakers in a wholly original environment that will transform downtown Miami.
The Borscht Film Festival is possible due to generous support from the Miami World Cinema Center, DWNTWN, Downtown Development Authority, Miami-Dade Cultural Affairs, and many others.

Back in Sunny and humid Miami...passing by Sunset Place

So all of you know that there are plenty of wine tasting spots these days across South Florida. From wine distributor centers (turned wine tasting rooms) to wine bars and wine shops, we all enjoy going to these different places to have some great wine.
I had heard about the place I'm going to mention to you on here but I honestly had not gone because word-of-mouth was that it was expensive. See, although I believe wine bars have to make money, I'm very much against people being ripped off. However, one can't always trust word-of-mouth.

I decided to stroll into Cavas wine tasting located right around the corner from Sunset Place and Bougainvillea's in South Miami.
When I came in, I was automatically greeted by one of the Cavas employees who gave me a full rundown of how the wine tasting works. This is a quite friendly and open staff who I could tell enjoy what they do.
Staff greeter held my credit card and swapped it with a Cavas card. I walked around the wine bar and used my Cavas card almost like a debit card as I poured small portions into my tasting glass (You can also enjoy a mid-size or a large pour for a higher price).

Prepare that wallet though. Prices do vary per wine and some small wine pour prices are in the $5 range and higher.
Seating is comfortable and very casual. There are couches right by the entrance where you can sip that tasty red while people watching the South Miami crowd.

Overall, a pleasant experience that I will enjoy again.
Recommend you try it out just watch that Cavas card doesn't run too high.
Salud!

Ah, the wonderful California wine...

I recently came back from what has to be one of the best trips I've ever taken.

It's true that the lifestyle of Sonoma and Napa winegrowers and wine lovers is much different than our fast pace Miami life. Moreover, at least most of the folks I spoke to seem to take a stance at life like no other group I met in the past.

They are concerned that their business must grow and prosper, since we're still in the midst of a financial crisis. But they are also hopeful that newer generations will learn about the viticulture and experience California's delicious wines.

The belief is widely spread about the importance of wine in people's lives. They are of a strong belief that wine should no longer be looked upon as a drink of the rich or elite. It's now also a blend of many hard at work along with many who work hard and love to consume.

Come join me on this ongoing post series where I will share with you my vacation exploration of Sonoma and Napa counties along with their surrounding valleys.

Over the next few days/weeks I will be posting on the smaller, less-known wineries which provide exceptional wine as good or at times better than some of the most powerful of Sonoma and Napa.

For now, here are some pictures of my stroll (not stop) along the side of some of Sonoma and Napa's bigger wineries.

Salud.

Coming soon a lot of posts on my wine touring travel of the

Don't miss this weekend's 8th annual Miami Wine Fair at the Miami Beach Convention Center.

New Post...Same Great Old Wine at Recession Prices

As the days of summer begin to "wine" down, we must raise our glasses for a tasty fall season.

Let's start out in the valleys of the Alexander, or better known as the Alexander Valley Sonoma County, where we find the Chateau Souverain Cabernet Sauvignon 2005.

It's rich and powerful with touches of dark cherry and plum. Drink while enjoying a tasty medium rare steak. Can't go wrong with it.

Price: $12-$16 range.

We now travel South to the land of Argentina, where wine and meat are never understated.

This is where we find Finca El Portillo Malbec 2005. It's deep and pure with toasty notes and oakiness.
Full of body and dark notes. Tasty!
Price range: $12-$14

Our final destination today takes us back to California for Rosenblum Cellars Zinfandel located in Alameda. It's described by many as "Zinfandel lover's paradise," due to its abundant production of Zinfandels.
This wine is not extravagant and/or bold. Rather a strawberry and fruity bouquet with a round finish.
Some blends of Petite Syrah and Carignane.
Delicious!
Price range: $15-$19

Enjoy!

Delicious Recession-Proof Wines

I know. I know. This is the type of title that gets people excited but skeptical.
It's not uncommon to hear about recession-proof items. But what is uncommon is to hear about items that are bargain priced and don't have a catch.

My first one today is the Doña Paula 2006 Malbec. If you like flavourful and earthy reds, you'll certainly enjoy this one. With plenty of tannins and toasty notes, this Malbec has an intense body for you. The best part of it all: The cost. Find it in stores for $13-$17.

Castillo De Molina 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon demonstrates that Chile has plenty of great wines.
Although we most often hear about the Colchagua Valley wines, or the Don Melchores of the world, this Curico Valley Cabernet has plenty of oakiness and class to go around.
Look for those chocolate and raspeberry notes. All for $14-$18.

My third red review today is the Sebastiani 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon.
Dark blackberries and oakiness. Some nutmeg, and dry notes. Delicious!
Yes, it's affordable. $19-$23.

Now, I know I seldomnly write about whites. It doesn't mean I have something against them. It's simply that I don't enjoy them as much as reds.
However, I tasted a couple a few weeks back that made me think twice about not enjoying some more whites during this sizzling summer.
One from the West and one from the land of Australia:
King Estate Oregon Pinot Grigio - A bit dry and full of sparks. Hints of apple and cedar.
Brancott Marlborough New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc- Rich and crisp. Some butter, apple and watermelon. Both are priced in the moderate range of $15-$22.

The world financial crisis continues, unfortunately. However, that doesn't mean we shouldn't enjoy delicious, well-priced wines.

Continue the tradition. Salud!

Tasty Wines For A Good Price

We all know we are in tough times. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't enjoy a good wine to get us away from our daily stress. Besides, not to be cliche, but life is short. Drink some red wine!

After trying a Balduzzi Cabernet Reserve from Maule Valley Chile, I must say I felt a bit relieved from my daily routine.
At a very affordable price, what Balduzzi brings to the table is more than your average vino. A bit of a dry cherry and firm taste along with some tannins and a mild aroma.
You should enjoy this tasty bottle with some mixed cheeses. Price range is $12-$25.

Another flavorsome red I tried recently is the Casa de La Ermita Petit Verdot. It comes from the wine-making municipality of Jumilla in what we call in spanish "La Madre Patria" (Spain).
Although Jumilla is very well known for its Monastrell varietal, this Petit Verdot touches several parts of the tongue that will make you wanting more. Its aroma is intense but its taste is even better. Look for spices and tannins as well as some dry tastes.
The best part of all: It's affordable. Look for it in the $18-$35 range.

If you think I'm a red Cab type of guy, you're correct.
One last one for now:
The Montes Alpha Cabernet 2006 from Colchagua Valley in Chile is one of those reds you grow to like. The first time I tried it I must say I was not too pleased with it. However, after giving it a second shot, I felt much better about it. It's a mild aroma and light tannins blended very well. I enjoyed that it wasn't overbearing and extravagant, but rather mild and classic.
Very affordable. Price range $12-$20.

Unfortunately, the financial crisis has hit all sectors of the economy. But you can still enjoy delicious wine at a low price.

Salud!

Iron Horse Vineyards 2005

We all love intense, full-bodied red wine. Well, at least some of us.
I tasted the 2005 Iron Horse Vineyards blend of Cabernet, Merlot and
Petit Verdot and I must say it was amazing. Its richness and quality mixed
very well with its dry cherry taste.
There was definite some oakiness and plum to it. Overall, a delicious well-flavored
red.
Enjoy!

Here come the Cabs

I know this weekend is the South Beach Wine and Food Festival and thousands will be enjoying different wine selections from all over the world. Of course, I'm sure they are a bit more apprehensive in regards to how they spend their money these days due to the global financial crisis.
But, regardless, people will be enjoying wine. In fact, an article came out this week in The Miami Herald which stated that despite the financial turmoil people are still buying wine but simply at lower prices.
So, of course, here I am again with some delicious Cabs.
This is a favorite of many and one I'd not tried until recently: The 2006 Silver Oak Cabernet from Alexander Valley.
It's quite intense, full of tannins and with plenty of body. Delicious from top to bottom. Hints of black cherry and cedar linger your mouth after this one.

Of course, to top that one off it takes a lot. However, at a much lower price there is the Conn Creek Cabernet 2004 from Napa Valley. It's still powerful and full with a blackberry, toasty feeling to it. A definite try!

Finally, for now, another Cabernet but from down in Valle Rapel, Chile.
The Walnut Crest 2007 Cabernet. It's silky and full of aroma. Not quite as powerful and intense, but with a lot of richness in taste and flavorful. Pair it up with some Ribeye tonight.

More updates to come very soon. But for now I hope you enjoy. Salud!

I apologize about the hiatus...but I'm back (Again)

Well, it has been a long time. I must say I miss writing this.
The past few months have been an adventure. My most recent taste
is the Chateau St. Jean (2005) Merlot from Sonoma County, California.
It had a great aroma and start. The pour from the bottle to the glass was
breathtaking. There were lots of black cherry, dark chocolate and definitely
dark cherries in its end. Great nose and palate, overall.

During the holidays, I also had a chance to encounter a couple of other wines:
I must say for its value ($15-$25) range the Veramonte Primus (2004)from Chile was delicious.
Its complex dark cherry notes, cocoa and cassis gives this wine a complex, yet refined taste.
Its smokiness and fleshness gives your accompaniment (meat, poultry or pork) a great end.

Finally, I must say the California Lotus Merlot (2006) had a pleasant touch to it. A mid-palate taste with some hints of mineral, berry and plum set the mood for a mild tone.
A definite second try will be forthcoming by me in the near future.
